While I am an avid spa-goer, it is usually for a relaxing massage, rather than a facial. My sensitive skin does not do well with the poking and prodding, and I do not trust it to just anyone. When I signed up to visit Ambra Salon and European Spa in Chicago’s Gold Coast, I was honestly a bit weary of the facial I was about to receive and almost switched it to a massage, but luckily decided to give it a go.
My aesthetician, Dana (pronounced like “Donna”) D. immediately put me at ease, by asking me about my skin and assuring me that she would explain everything that she was doing throughout the treatment, and reminding me to speak up if anything felt uncomfortable.
She started with a soothing cleansing, massage, and steam to remove any skin impurities. Then, 24 Karat Gold LEAF was massaged into my skin and combined with “micro-needles” therapy which helps with absorption and penetration of the active ingredients. The treatment promises to rejuvenate the skin immediately by slowing down collagen depletion and stimulating cell growth. It instantly gave my skin satiny smoothness and luminosity.
Dana then applied a refreshing eye treatment, followed by a thermal mask, which is a self heating mineral clay mask that helps with firming, detoxifying and increases absorption of active ingredients. It left my skin with a smooth and supple appearance.
During the entire treatment, my hands were also being treated with a skin cream, covered in heated gloves to help penetrate the hydrating lotion.
When the treatment was over, I was so relaxed that I did not want to leave! But I did with a fresh-faced glow.
While Ambra does not offer the lush amenities found in hotel spas, nice changing rooms, robes, and a comfortable waiting room are available, and the facilities are clean and well-appointed. The convenient location in the Gold Coast is also nice for an after-work treatment, weekend respite from shopping along Michigan Avenue, or a quick lunchtime service.
I was very happy with Dana and would not hesitate returning to her, or to Ambra.
