Brunch at Flo – A Flavor Trip to the Southwest

Highlighting the flavors of New Mexican cuisine, Flo offers a tasty brunch just west of downtown in Chicago’s Noble Square neighborhood. I had visited Flo once before and was eager to return to try more of the restaurants flavorful offerings. While Flo does accept reservations during the week, as well as for dinner on the weekends, it does not take reservations for brunch. However, even during a busy weekend morning, our wait was only about twenty minutes.

Flo’s brunch menu is broken down in categories such as Sweet Tooth, Huevos, Brunch Specialties, and Lunchish, in addition to side items and brunch drinks. Lighter options, such as fresh fruit, smoothies, and granola, are also offered.

After perusing the menu, I wanted to try everything, but I elected to go with Flo Style under the Huevos section of the menu, which is comprised of scrambled eggs, a fantastic roasted poblano pepper sauce, fresh pico de gallo, and tasty black beans. As with all of Flo’s egg dishes, it was also served with seasoned potatoes. While the dish was fantastic overall, I was not crazy about the potatoes, so I barely touched them and instead used the warm tortilla to sop up any remaining sauce, eggs, and beans.

My husband ordered the pulled pork tacos from the Brunch Specialties section of the menu. While the eggs were a touch overcooked so that the yolk was not as runny as preferred, the dish overall was extremely flavorful and delicious, especially with the kick of the pickled jalapenos and splash of the Flo-branded hot sauces served on the side.

I had a craving for pancakes, so I also ordered the strawberry-banana pancakes from the Sweet Tooth section of the  menu, which accurately depicts my taste preferences. While the entree portion is made up of three pancakes, they are also available individually as a side item. No sugary fruit compote here; fresh bananas and strawberries are mixed right into the batter. Light, fluffy, and extremely flavorful, these pancakes were fantastic – no syrup or butter was needed. For those with a sweet tooth worse than mine, bacon-chocolate pancakes are also available.

Overall, our brunch at Flo was wonderful. The food was fresh and flavorful and the service was efficient and informed. Flo has definitely been added to my regular brunch-locale rotation and I look forward to returning for dinner, as well.
