Located on the ground floor of theWit Hotel in Chicago’s Loop, State and Lake Chicago Tavern not only caters to hotel guests, but Loop workers, local residents, and tourists alike. And, with a complete brunch menu featuring local and regional ingredients with many healthy and vegetarian options, everyone can find something to love for brunch at the casual eatery.
On my recent Saturday visit, the restaurant was about one-third full, and upbeat music was playing in the background. We had our choice of where to sit, and chose a table in the center of the restaurant. Our server immediately greeted us and was pleasant and very cheerful, and took our drink order right away. My husband ordered a Bloody Mary, which he was very pleased with after removing the rubbery beef jerky stuck in it, and I elected hot green tea.
In addition to the normal brunch menu, State and Lake recently launched a special Beer Brunch, featuring Lagunitas Brewing Company inspired culinary creations, paired with some of State and Lake’s favorite brews. One entree and one craft draft beer runs $20. If you are looking to share some fried chicken, biscuits and beer, then definitely opt for the Fried Chicken Bucket & Flight. A nearby table ordered it and the fried chicken and biscuits were delivered in a fun plastic bucket, along with some honey and maple syrup!
I stuck with the traditional brunch menu and ordered the Egg White Omelet. I have a severe biscuit obsession, so when I saw that State and Lake made their biscuits in house, I requested a biscuit in lieu of toast, as well as fresh fruit instead of the tavern potatoes. I was extremely impressed with the omelet. It was served piping hot, and was stuffed full of spinach, Fresno chilis, mushroom pesto and goat cheese. The flavors were delicious and it is definitely one of my all time favorite omelets. And that biscuit – it was oh so good! Buttery and flaky and scrumptious, and topped with flaked sea salt and rosemary. I added a bit of honey and it was just great.
My husband was also very pleased with his selection – the Breakfast 101 North – which consisted of two eggs – his ordered over easy – tavern potato, and breakfast meat, along with toast. The crispy baby potatoes were cooked perfectly, the eggs were nice and runny, and the meat juicy and flavorful.
Overall, we really enjoyed our brunch at State and Lake. Parking is very sparse in the area, so we valeted and validated our parking for a reduced rate. However, I recommend taking public transportation, as many CTA train and bus lines are just outside the restaurant.
The restaurant is suitable to everyone, from solo diners, to groups of friends, to families, and reservations are accepted. Because State and Lake is the sole restaurant in theWit Hotel, save for some bites that can be found at the rooftop bar, State and Lake is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner during the week, and for brunch and dinner on the weekend.
