Recently, a new outpost of the breakfast-centric Eggsperience opened in Lincoln Park, at the ever-busy intersection of North Avenue and Sheffield. Eggsperience also has two other downtown locations, one in River North and one in Greektown, in addition to five suburban locations. It is family-owned, and serves only breakfast and lunch, seven days a week. Overall, Eggsperience is a glorified diner, serving huge portions of classic breakfast fare such as pancakes, waffles, crepes, eggs, and French toast. Lunch is comprised of salads and sandwiches. Eggsperience is a perfect spot for a family weekend brunch, or a quick weekday breakfast or lunch. Portions are large and prices are right.
Eggsperience serves whole leaf teas, as well as the fancy coffee drinks such as vanilla lattes and cappuccinos, in addition to the standard cup of joe. Be warned, however, that if you order anything other than tea or a standard coffee, it will take a while for the barrista to make and serve your drink. Fresh squeezed juices are also available, in addition to other creative juice mixes.
The menu is large, the options are endless, and the portions are substantial. While Eleni’s egg white omelet is healthy in theory, featuring fresh spinach, mushrooms, roasted red peppers and low fat mozzarella, along with fruit on the side, the portion could easily be shared by three people. All omelets at Eggsperience are served “French-style” and are extra large and fluffy as a result of the baking process. The flavors were quite good, especially with the addition of some avocado in place of the cheese. The side of pancakes that arrived with the omelet were standard and unnecessary. A friend ordered the huevos rancheros, a gigantic tortilla loaded with refried beans and topped with two eggs, melted cheese, and salsa. It looked delicious! While she came nowhere near being able to finish it, she quite enjoyed the dish.
While most of the items on Eggsperience’s menu are typical to a standard diner, it also offers creative items such as acai super fruit yogurt, caramelized apple pecan pancakes, and buenos diaz breakfast chilaquiles. Everyone really can find something here.
Service was good, the restaurant was clean, and we only had to wait five minutes for a table during a busy Saturday late-morning rush. While Eggsperience is not at the top of my list for breakfast or brunch and is by no means a culinary find, I will definitely return for consistent food in a relaxed and comfortable environment.
