June in Chicago is supposed to mean sunny skies, warm temps, street fests, and beach time. However, Mother Nature clearly has not received that memo, as we have been struck with cool temperatures and massive amounts of rain. So, instead of sunning on my rooftop deck, I have been dreaming of warm weather vacations, like the one I recently took in April to Southern California.
I began my trip with a work conference in San Diego. I stayed at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, which is situated right on the San Diego Bay and along the famed Embarcadero – perfect for a morning run along the water.
The hotel had a great gym and lovely pool, and was conveniently located by the cute boutiques, lively bars, and tasty restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter. I even had a view of PETCO Park from my room!
During my stay in San Diego, I found a great juice bar – Vitality Tap – located within a health food store. I visited every morning for my green juice fix, which allowed me to start my day off right.
I also had some fantastic scallops at Searsucker, a restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter that I have previously visited. The ambiance is energetic and vivacious and the food and wines all top notch.
I also found a great lunch spot called La Puerta, which cured my craving for Cal-Mex cuisine, and it included fresh and tasty grilled shrimp tacos with Mexican rice and refried beans. Paired with an ice cold Pacifico and the warm sun and the day was completely made.
My favorite meal in San Diego, however, came at a new restaurant located in the San Diego Marina called Puesto, which serves elevated Mexican street food. The indoor-outdoor restaurant had a fun vibe with an open kitchen, fantastic margaritas, and unique and delicious tacos.
After the bright and fulfilling Crab Guacamole, with huge chunks of lump crab meat, I tried the Zucchini & Cactus Veg, Lobster, and Rajas Veg tacos and all were spectacular.
Stay tuned for Part 2 of my Southern California vacation tomorrow on the blog!
