I, like most people, love ice cream. And, I love supporting Midwestern products and companies. So, when I heard that Michigan-based Hudsonville Creamery & Ice Cream Company was visiting Chicago to unveil three limited-edition fall seasonal flavors, I had to check them out.
Hudsonville Creamery began making ice cream in Hudsonville, Michigan in 1926. Since that time, not only has Hudsonville moved its operations to Holland, Michigan, but Hudsonville is now sold in stores outside of Michigan, including all over the Chicago-land area. Whoo hoo! Jewel, Mariano’s, Meijer, and Angelo Caputos all carry Hudsonville.
I had never tried Hudsonville ice cream before, so I was looking forward to trying it. Oh my gosh, all three flavors were fantastic! I started with the Pure Michigan Caramel Apple. Before I even tasted the ice cream, I smelled crisp, fresh apples. A first for ice cream, for sure! Every single apple that goes into this ice cream is hand-picked in Michigan and folded into caramel-infused ice cream. It literally tastes just like caramel apples on a stick, and it was incredibly creamy.
Next, I tried the Chicago Caramel Popcorn flavor. For anyone craving the sweet-n-salty combination, this one is for you. Whole pieces of caramel popcorn are mixed into the ice cream, and a salty ribbon of caramel runs through it. Yet, another winner.
I may have saved the best for last, though, with the Bear Traxx, just in time for football season. In this variation, real peanut butter and fudge pieces ripple through Hudsonville’s Original Chocolate ice cream. The peanut butter and chocolate combination is a total winner.
I also learned that you can actually use ice cream in both sweet, as well as savory, recipes! We tried Bear Traxx Fudgy Bread, made from Bear Traxx ice cream, cocoa powder, sugar, flour and chocolate chips; Bear Traxx smoothies, made with Bear Traxx ice cream and milk; as well as a dipping sauce for chicken and beef skewers, made from Bear Traxx ice cream and ponzu, a citrus-based soy sauce. Who knew?!?
Who says that ice cream is just for summer? With these fall flavors, and especially the chocolate-peanut butter Bear Traxx, bring on the falling leaves, crisp fall air, and football. What is your favorite flavor?
