RL Restaurant is timeless and never goes out of style. Located adjacent to the world’s largest Polo store, the Chicago Flagship on Michigan Avenue, RL attracts everyone from tourists looking for a shopping reprieve, to the locals. Both the bar and dining room are warm and intimate, with dark woods and leather booths. Tables are set quite close together, making for a lively atmosphere, rather than a quiet or romantic one. I have been to RL many times since it opened in 1999, from casual brunches on the patio to celebratory dinners in the dining room, and it never fails to deliver.
I recently visited with a good friend for a late weekday lunch. As usual, the dining room was packed with business people, shoppers, and locals. We only had limited time, so we ordered right away – jumbo sea scallops for her, and the Crab Louis for me. While we were waiting for our food, a bread basket containing what may have been the largest cracker ever made was delivered.
Our entrees were served shortly thereafter. My Crab Louis was incredible and the perfect light lunch, especially with the dressing served on the side. Fresh and delicious lump crabmeat overflowed from half an avocado, and was served with sliced tomatoes and half of a hard boiled egg on top of bibb lettuce.
The jumbo sea scallops were phenomenal. Plump, juicy, and tender, the scallops were cooked perfectly, and were served with a cucumber and tomato salad, topped with a white balsamic cream. I definitely plan to order the scallops on my next visit.
The lobster club is also an excellent lunch choice, with applewood-smoked bacon and truffle mayonnaise, and the bouillabaisse is a favorite at dinner.
RL is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, as well as brunch on Sunday. It is great for a warm respite from shopping along Michigan Avenue, a glass of Champagne at the bar, brunch with the girls, a business lunch, or a nice dinner.
